● A modern interpretation of the late-19th-century workwear known as “waist overalls”
● Made with rare American Sea Island Cotton
● Natural brown cotton color with no added dye
● Heavy canvas woven densely on vintage shuttle looms
● Rugged workwear construction elevated with premium cotton

BIG JOHN WAISTOVERALL reinterprets one of the early forms of work trousers that preceded the modern five-pocket jean, using heavyweight canvas made with rare American Sea Island Cotton.

The distinctive brown tone comes from the natural color of the raw cotton itself. It is not created through artificial dyeing, allowing the inherent character of the fiber to become part of the fabric’s appearance.

By combining this naturally colored premium cotton with rugged vintage-inspired workwear construction, BIG JOHN creates a piece that feels both historic and distinctly modern.

■ What is a WAISTOVERALL?

In the late 19th century, work trousers developed from bib overalls into waist-length garments that could be worn with suspenders. These garments were commonly known as waist overalls and form part of the historical lineage that eventually led to modern five-pocket jeans.

BIG JOHN retains the character of this early workwear construction while refining the proportions for contemporary wear.

■ American Sea Island Cotton This heavy canvas is made using rare American Sea Island Cotton, prized for its exceptionally long and fine fibers.

The cotton used for this fabric has a naturally occurring brown tone. The color comes directly from the raw cotton fiber and is not produced by dyeing.

Its smooth, supple character brings an unexpected refinement to a fabric traditionally associated with rugged workwear.
■ Natural Brown Cotton – Undyed Color

The brown color of this canvas is the original color of the American Sea Island Cotton itself.

No artificial brown dye is used to create the shade. The natural tone of the cotton is retained as part of the finished fabric, giving each garment an organic, understated character that comes directly from the raw material.
■ Heavy Canvas The fabric is slowly and densely woven on vintage shuttle looms to create a substantial heavy canvas with pronounced body and structure.

Despite its rugged appearance, the quality of the American Sea Island Cotton gives the fabric a refined and supple hand. With wear and washing, the canvas gradually softens and molds to the wearer.
■ WAISTOVERALL × Heavy Canvas The deep rise and generous proportions of the classic WAISTOVERALL pattern are reinforced by the structure of the heavyweight canvas.

The result is a distinctive silhouette that sits apart from both conventional chinos and modern five-pocket jeans. Over time, the fabric softens and develops a more personal shape and character.
