A heavyweight Japanese flannel shirt developed from the yarn up by BIG JOHN.
Drawing on BIG JOHN’s experience in denim, this original heavyweight flannel was developed in Niigata, one of Japan’s renowned textile-producing regions. Made with U.S.-grown cotton, the fabric combines carefully selected yarn counts, twisting methods, and multiple indigo dyeing techniques to create a rugged yet refined texture.
Instead of rope-dyeing the finished heavy yarn, No.10 single yarns are first rope-dyed with indigo and then two strands are twisted together to create a yarn equivalent to approximately No.5 count.
This additional process combines the strength of a two-ply yarn with a softer hand and a cleaner, richer indigo appearance.
Other colors are direct-dyed. Combining different dyeing methods creates tonal depth and allows the fabric to develop subtle changes in color with continued wear and washing.
The indigo-dyed yarn gradually changes through wear, friction, and washing. Over time, the shirt develops softer contrast, fading, and a more personal surface character—much like a well-worn pair of jeans.

The substantial fabric can be worn as a traditional shirt or as a light outer layer over a T-shirt or sweatshirt.
Because the garment has already undergone washing and drying, major shrinkage during normal home washing is reduced, although slight dimensional changes may still occur.
Avoid prolonged contact with light-colored clothing, bags, furniture, and other surfaces, especially when the garment is new or wet.
Wash separately from other garments.
Slight dimensional changes may occur depending on washing conditions.
Do not tumble dry at home.
Do not use chlorine bleach.
