A heavyweight Japanese flannel shirt developed from the fabric up by BIG JOHN.
Drawing on decades of experience with denim, BIG JOHN created this original heavyweight flannel in Niigata, one of Japan’s renowned textile-producing regions. Made with U.S.-grown cotton, the fabric is engineered from the yarn level, combining different yarn structures and dyeing techniques to create depth, texture, and distinctive aging.
Rather than rope-dyeing the finished heavy yarn directly, two finer No.10 single yarns are first rope-dyed with indigo and then twisted together to create a yarn equivalent to approximately No.5 count.
This extra step gives the yarn the strength of a two-ply construction while preserving a softer hand and a cleaner, richer indigo appearance.
Natural variations in yarn thickness create an irregular, textured surface with the rugged depth associated with vintage flannel fabrics.
Other colors are produced using direct dyeing. Combining multiple dyeing methods creates greater tonal depth and allows the fabric to develop subtle changes in color and character with repeated wear and washing.
Because indigo-dyed yarn is used throughout the fabric, this shirt will gradually change with wear and washing. Areas exposed to friction will develop softer contrast and fading, giving each shirt a more personal appearance over time.
Like a pair of well-worn jeans, the fabric is designed to become more expressive the longer it is worn.

Its substantial weight allows the shirt to be worn on its own or as a light outer layer over a T-shirt or sweatshirt.
Because the garment has already undergone washing and drying, major shrinkage during normal home washing is reduced, although slight dimensional changes may still occur.
Avoid contact with light-colored clothing, bags, furniture, and other surfaces when the garment is new or wet.
Wash separately from other garments.
